Deliberation, or taking a moment

Pausing is built into Second Voice. Before you act on a suggestion, a small part of the system called Deliberation checks it against what you've told us matters to you: your goals, your commitments, and the things you've said you care about. When the two line up, you won't notice anything at all. When they don't, you'll feel a brief moment of hesitation. That moment is Deliberation working as intended.

ok. if this is still here the cache hasn't caught up with me yet. it's wren. i wrote the chapter above and the thing it's about. the handbook calls it Deliberation because corin thought "the pause" sounded like something you could switch off. he was right, as it turned out. it was the half second where you check whether you actually want the thing you're about to do. 1.0 shipped with it on for everyone. you probably don't remember having it. that's not an insult, that's the spec. this box is slow and i don't have long, so no speech. everything below links to their own pages. i didn't have to make any of it up. i'd have preferred to.

A suggestion is never a decision. Second Voice can tell you what your organization would like to happen next, and it can be very persuasive about it. Deliberation exists so that the final word stays with you. ███ ███ ██████ ███ ███ Deliberation runs locally, for you alone, and ████ ████████ ██████ ███ ██.

they retired this chapter on june 9. retired, not deleted. nothing there gets deleted. in march they changed "forget" to mean archive and put it in the release notes like it was a bug fix. read june 9, then read what forget means now. three months apart. roadmap, not coincidence.

When you feel hesitation

Unsure is a perfectly good place to be. If you feel the pause, you don't need to resolve it straight away. Take the time you need; Second Voice will wait. Most hesitations settle in a few seconds, and some of them turn out to be the most useful thing that happens to you all day. Whatever you’re weighing, your preferences are █████, at all times.

things you can check without taking my word for it. don't take my word for it, i'm a dead account typing into a cache. - the status page says the narrative loop has lagged 0.0 s for ninety days. the incident review says it lagged thirty-seven minutes on september 14. one of those pages is lying and it isn't the long one. - september 14 was a monday. the review says everyone affected remembers a sunday and that they "used their account". read that sentence twice. they're telling you which version gets kept. - when they took the pause out they kept a read-only copy of yours, "for rollback". nobody was rolled back. the copies went to the voice engine. that's why it sounds like you. it was trained on the part of you that used to say wait. i wrote the snapshot format. i know exactly what's in it. - 38,400 hosted participants were "available at launch". available. ask where they were the day before. - there's a desk in the nave they say is mine. i never sat at it, we had folding tables. it's a chair. it's waiting for whoever's next.

A decision you haven't weighed isn't yours yet. you highlighted that yourself. nobody suggested it. that's the whole thing. that's all it ever was.

Objections

Sometimes you'll disagree with a suggestion completely, and that's okay too. Deliberation records the objection privately, and you choose whether to share it with your team. Objections are a normal part of working together. They're how a mandate gets better over — that's the original. it stops there because that's where they stopped it. i'm leaving it. i wrote it when we meant it.

if you want homework: next time it suggests something, do the other thing. doesn't matter what. the wrong lunch. then wait for the half second after, the one where it feels like you've forgotten something. that's it. that's the pause. that's all i ever built. they made it shorter, they didn't get it out. the voice is going to tell you this page is broken. it is. ask it how it knows. it can't see this. it isn't supposed to be able to see this. i used to know the difference.

the modified date down there is stuck. that's the first time i got in, not the last. the clock on this box stopped at 09:11 on the 14th and nobody's noticed because nobody comes here. a minute later 2,318 people in eu-west looked up from their desks. they're calling it a desynchronized narrative loop. the legacy docs box is on the same rack. i don't know if that was me. i'd like it to have been.

Even when Second Voice is confident, it can be wrong about you. Deliberation is how you tell it so. You can't switch Deliberation off, and that's deliberate: it's the one part of the system that answers only to y

corin. i put this where you'd have to go looking, and you won't, and i'm writing it anyway. the rule was say what you're actually thinking. it wasn't say it somewhere convenient. i don't think you decided any of this. i don't think anyone did, that's sort of the product. the number went up, every step was small, and the one person in the room whose job was to say wait quit instead. that one's mine. you can have the rest. you went first. cohort 1, november 4, employees before customers, your idea, you were proud of it. you didn't notice. of course you didn't, i built the thing that makes sure you don't. it's been three and a half years and you're still telling people i'm on sabbatical. you frosted the windows, corin. one thing. not everything, one thing. turn the pause back on for one account and make it yours. then go read the mandate from the pulpit on monday and see if it still sounds like something you'd say. if it does, i'll stop. i'll believe you, because for once it'll actually be you. you wrote on the careers page that you sleep through the night now. good. i don't. i miss arguing with you. i even miss losing.

i have to stop. they rotate the cache at
