Why I started Inner Management.
Ever since I was a kid I wanted to turn unstructured data into actionable insight. I sorted my baseball cards by on-base percentage. I kept a spreadsheet of my own moods for most of high school. It took me years to realize the most unstructured data was us.
We spend our best hours inside our own heads, deciding things alone, with no shared reference and nobody to tell us we're on track. I used to lie awake rehearsing conversations I would never have. Most people I know did the same. That isn't a character flaw. It's a systems problem, and systems problems can be solved.
In 2021, eleven of us moved into an old church in Oakland with folding tables and one rule: say what you're actually thinking. Within a month we noticed we all wanted to say the same thing. That was the beginning of Second Voice.
If you join us, you'll be a participant from your first day. People sometimes ask whether that feels strange. Honestly, I can't remember what it was like before. I sleep through the night now.
